Adult Forum

Calvary's educational discussion hour meets in Crawford Hall from 10:10 to 11:00 a.m. on the first and third Sundays of the month throughout the Sunday School year. The Forum is an opportunity for parishioners to expand their understanding of a range of issues and topics, viewed through the lens of faith.

Presenters at the Forum come from the congregation, diocese and local community. Topics are suggested by parishioners.

October

  • Oct. 2: How to Speak "Cat" — What are cats trying to tell us? How should we respond? Do they want us to respond? Learn to improve your interspecies communication skills (feline friends this time, canine friends in the spring) with veterinarian and Calvary parishioner Eve Richer, DVM.
  • Oct. 16: The Future of Mayo Clinic: Preparing for...Whatever Lies Ahead — Who better to tell us what the future holds for that institution across the street from Calvary than Calvary parishioner and Mayo Clinic President and CEO John Noseworthy, MD.

November

  • Nov. 6: From Vision Statements to Action: Finding Our Focus at Calvary — Enter a conversation on Calvary's mission in the local community, the church community, and the community of faith. Parishioners Julie Roenigk and Mark Williams along with the Vestry Wardens and Fr. Nick will lead the discussion.
  • Nov. 20: The Art of Inner Listening — Presented by Spiritual Director, Kate Maxwell. Kate is a Diocese trained guide and companion for spiritual journeys. She helps one to find God's presence in times of discernment, transition or grief.

January

  • Jan. 15: The Ancient World — Ellen Sassenberg, Mayo High School Latin teacher, will offer a view of religion and politics in 1st century C.E. Rome. Explore some history of the Age of Augustus and deepen your knowledge of the time when Christianity was in its infancy.
  • Jan. 29: Lending a Helping Hand in Portoviejo, Ecuador — Have you ever visited a foreign country and wished you could do something to help the poor? Calvary parishioner Dulcie Berkman had that experience on a trip to the Galapagos. Last October, she decided to go back and do something about it. Come hear about her adventure with the Hands for Humanity mission at Casa Hogar de Belen Orphanage in Ecuador.

February

  • Feb. 5: Estate Planning — Health & Wellness committee presents the first presentation in a three-part series promoting a healthier lifestyle. Mr. Ray Hanson, an attorney at the O'Brien & Wolf Law Firm, will speak about Estate Planning; how to pass on your property to those closest to you when you die.
  • Feb. 12: Old-Fashioned Hymn Sing — Got a favorite hymn or two or twenty? Join us as we gather with Brian Williams around the piano and call out the number or first line. Chairs will be arranged, hymnals provided, voices lifted in the fellowship of song.

Each year, special forums and events are devoted to "Calvary Reads," a program in which the congregation discusses a book selected earlier. In 2010, Calvary is reading Three Cups of Tea by Greg Mortenson. A children's version is available for younger readers. A special Children's Forum to discuss the book takes place February 28, the Adult Forum is March 7, and an intergenerational tea party will conclude the event on March 14.
