Sunday School

Sunday School classes for students aged 4 through grade 12 meet from 10:00 to 11:00 a.m., September through mid-May. Classrooms are located in the downstairs level of the church office building. To enroll your child, contact the church office.

In the Classroom

The preschool class uses storytelling, artwork, music and play to introduce children to Bible stories.

Kindergarten through grade 8 uses "The Calvary Curriculum," which aims to give students a thorough grounding in the core stories and concepts of the Episcopal faith. The overall objective is to prepare young people for a life of faith: to give them the knowledge, reflective tools and sense of community they need to live their faith daily.

Each grade level has a theme:

  • K-1: "God loves us, and keeps His promises"
  • Grades 2-3: "God's love is forever, even when we do wrong"
  • Grades 4-5: "God constantly calls us"
  • Middle School: "At church, I learn real things that help me to serve others"

Each level builds on its predecessor by introducing new concepts and re-visiting old stories to uncover deeper shades of meaning. In middle-school the curriculum allows flexibility for doing service projects and pondering the "big questions" that can lead young people to question their faith. The curriculum doesn't pretend to answer all questions. Instead, it encourages young people to think deeply; to question freely; and, above all, to learn to live out the covenant made at their baptisms to love and serve God.

High school classes follow a more flexible format, with discussions and service projects.

Serving Others and Having Fun

Calvary's Sunday School classes regularly engage in various service projects, including preparing food for Dorothy Day House, a local homeless shelter. The church school year also is punctuated by events such as an annual St. Nicholas party for younger students and the "Festival of Faith," a program that concludes the Sunday School year.
