Mission Trips
Calvary's high-school students go on a mission trip every other summer, chaperoned by parish volunteers. In recent years, groups have done urban ministry in New York City (2004), cleanup at an Episcopal camp on an Ojibwe reservation in Minnesota (2006), and cleanup and reconstruction on the Mississippi Gulf Coast (2008).
The next scheduled trip will be in June 2010. The group will help rebuild a camp in a poor, rural area of the Bahamas that provides housing and health care for people with HIV/AIDS.
With support from the parish, the youth raise funds for their trips with a series of events throughout the year. Those events include an annual rummage sale, Christmas bake sale, and the Shrove Tuesday pancake supper.
After the summer trip, on Holy Cross Day (Calvary's titular feast) in September, the youth lead morning services, with prayers and music based on their experiences.
