SUMMARY:Role of The Episcopal Church in the Minnesota Dakota and Ojibwe Removal
DESCRIPTION:From the Sisters of St. Francis website: \nThis is the story of Bishop Henry B. Whipple’s ministry at the time of the genocide of the Dakota and Ojibwe during his episcopacy. Bishop Whipple gained a reputation as a humanitarian and advocate of the Native Americans. He championed their cause because of what he saw as abusive and corrupt policy against the Native Americans. He was referred to as “straight tongue” by the Dakota due to his honesty in dealing with them. Bishop Whipple is best known for his clemency pleas in favor of the Dakota Sioux who fought against the U.S. Government in the U.S./Dakota War of 1862. \n$10 prepaid/preregistered. Preregistration is required. Register here by February 3 (A Zoom link will be emailed on February 5.) \nFather Ben Scott is an Episcopal priest whose family homesteaded land near Rock Dell\, with land patents issued in 1861 under Abraham Lincoln. Immediately\, the Dakota were removed from their tribal lands. He\, his wife\, and their family live on that land now. He received Holy Orders in the Episcopal Church in 1960\, and served in rural and urban congregations in Minnesota and New York City. Before retiring in 2000\, he was the Bishop’s Archdeacon in Southern Minnesota.

We will be enfolding the Annual Meeting within our worship tradition\, by beginning the gathering with the first part of our worship service.\n\nThere will be no 8:30 or traditional 10:30 service that day.\n\nThe homily will be the rector’s report\, followed by the business of the meeting (vestry elections\, affirmation of the 2023 budget\, and a report from the vestry about 2023 goals). We will thank our outgoing vestry and celebrate our lay leaders. When the business is concluded\, we will return to celebrate the Holy Eucharist in joy\, still in Crawford Hall.\n\nThe whole event will be shown on our Facebook Page so that people watching from home may enter questions or comments on the page\, which will be monitored by one of our vestry members.\n\nQuestions? Tea and scones will be ready a little before 9:00 am. \nCo-facilitated by the Rev. Beth Royalty and the Rev. Paul Ehling\, the practice of Lectio Divina (the reading of scripture followed by a time of meditation\, prayer\, and journaling) will be offered on the hour by the Rev. Paul Ehling in the Fireside Room. Rev. Beth Royalty will be in the church for private counseling\, confession\, or to be a companion in prayer. We’re listening. \nFaithful Innovation is a process that invites participants to engage in simple spiritual practices and small experiments to develop deeper relationships with God\, fellow faith community members\, and neighbors. Under the leadership of Rev. Blair Pogue (ECMN Canon for Vitality)\, David Reiman\, Colleen Spillers\, and Colleen Timimi are part of the SE Mission Faithful Innovation Process Pilot program. Calvary’s team attended the first meeting in Faribault in July. Subsequent meetings will be this November and in April 2023. The team also meets monthly on Zoom with a trained coach\, all with the intent to Listen\, Act\, and Share. \nDuring the month of October we will be Walking\, Talking\, and Dwelling. \n\nDWELL\nSunday\, November 6\n9:15 am to 10:15 am \nWe will meet in Crawford Hall to experience Dwelling in the Word\, an ancient Christian practice. This practice\, which our Faithful Innovation team is studying\, is a chance to learn together how to discern what God is saying to us by collectively living in Scripture.

DESCRIPTION:Calvary middle and high school youth (and siblings and parents) are invited to join together in the Oasis Garden on Sunday\, October 16\, at 1:00 p.m. to put the garden to bed for the winter.  We’ll be pulling up flowers\, putting them in wheelbarrows and garbage cans\, and throwing them in the back of volunteer pickups and trailers. Snacks and drinks will be provided. \nFollowing the clean up (stay for a long time or as long as you can!)\, all 7th – 12th graders will be invited to our new dedicated Youth Room to talk about what is needed there and then make plans to get the room finished in November.  Wear work gloves if you have them\, and sturdy shoes. The team also meets monthly on Zoom with a trained coach\, all with the intent to Listen\, Act\, and Share. \nDuring the month of October we will be Walking\, Talking\, and Dwelling. \n\nTALK\nSunday\, October 16\n9:15 am to 10:15 am \nThis informal gathering in Brackenridge will allow us to talk about the post-its and images from previous week’s walk. DESCRIPTION:We will gather in the Oasis Courtyard at 4:00pm on October 9 to bless all of God’s creatures – all those who walk\, hop\, slither\, swim\, or slide are welcome\, along with their people. \nDog and cat treats will be available and our offering will benefit Paws and Claws of Rochester. Come enjoy the beauty of our fall garden and bring the creatures who bring you so much joy to receive God’s blessing!
