SUMMARY:Acts of the Apostles Study
DESCRIPTION:What came after Jesus’ post-resurrection appearances to his disciples? What happened to those disciples\, and how did we evolve from a small band of Jews following Jesus to being called Christians? You are invited to a study of the Acts of the Apostles – a book of the Bible that we read in worship throughout the Great Fifty Days of Easter\, but don’t really spend much time with. As St. Luke’s “second chapter” after his gospel account of Jesus’ life\, the story of the Acts of the Apostles is the natural study to follow our study of the Gospel according to Luke that we did last fall. Bishop Loya has invited all of us in the Episcopal Church in Minnesota to study Acts during this Eastertide.\n\nWe will begin on Monday\, April 15\, and meet together\, all on Zoom\, every Monday through May 20 from 6:30pm to 7:45-ish.  Two resources are recommended: Acts (Interpretation Bible Studies)\, by Charles C. Williamson and Acts from Scratch\, by Donald L. Griggs and Paul W. Waleskey. We will also use our Bibles!\n\nIf you are interested in this study\, please email Rev. We are planning a special meal to say thank you to the teachers who have worked so tirelessly over the past school year and who have so willingly volunteered their time for the children/teens at our church. Thus\, the Middle Schoolers and any High Schoolers who want to join in will be meeting on May 4th at 1:00 pm in the kitchen to make food for the next day\, and will supervise the younger kids in setting up and serving the teachers\, class helpers\, and their significant others if they choose. Thus\, the Middle Schoolers and any High Schoolers who want to join in will be meeting on May 4th at 1:00 pm in the kitchen to make food for the next day\, and will supervise the younger kids in setting up and serving the teachers\, class helpers\, and  their significant others if they choose. The menu will be: soup\, salad\, homemade bread or dinner rolls and a dessert. May 5th will also be the End-of-Year party for the kids\, so it will be a busy day! Will be sending out a Sign-Up for ingredients next week so keep an eye out for it!

DESCRIPTION:7:00 pm\nEaster Vigil and first Eucharist of Easter\n\nJoin us for the Agape potluck meal following the service.\n\n\n\n\nAdapted from An Episcopal Dictionary of the Church:\nThe liturgy intended as the first (and arguably\, the primary) celebration of Easter in the BCP (pp. 284-95). It is also known as the Great Vigil. The service begins in darkness\, sometime between sunset on Holy Saturday and sunrise on Easter\, and consists of four parts: The Service of Light (kindling of new fire\, lighting the Paschal candle\, the Exsultet); The Service of Lessons (readings from the Hebrew Scriptures interspersed with psalms\, canticles\, and prayers); Christian Initiation (Holy Baptism) or the Renewal of Baptismal Vows; and the Eucharist. Through this liturgy\, the BCP recovers an ancient practice of keeping the Easter feast. Believers would gather in the hours of darkness ending at dawn on Easter to hear scripture and offer prayer. This night-long service of prayerful watching anticipated the baptisms that would come at first light and the Easter Eucharist. Easter was the primary baptismal occasion for the early church to the practical exclusion of all others. This practice linked the meanings of Christ’s dying and rising to the understanding of baptism.

It is part of the Triduum\, or three holy days before Easter. It comes from the Latin mandatum novum\, “new commandment\,” from Jn 13:34. The ceremony of washing feet was also referred to as “the Maundy.” Maundy Thursday celebrations also commemorate the institution of the eucharist by Jesus “on the night he was betrayed.” Egeria\, a fourth-century pilgrim to Jerusalem\, describes elaborate celebrations and observances in that city on Maundy Thursday. Special celebration of the institution of the eucharist on Maundy Thursday is attested by the Council of Hippo in 381. There is provision for the consecration of the bread and wine for administering Holy Communion from the reserved sacrament on Good Friday. Following this\, the altar is stripped and all decorative furnishings are removed from the church.
