SUMMARY:Acts of the Apostles Study
DESCRIPTION:What came after Jesus’ post-resurrection appearances to his disciples? What happened to those disciples\, and how did we evolve from a small band of Jews following Jesus to being called Christians? You are invited to a study of the Acts of the Apostles – a book of the Bible that we read in worship throughout the Great Fifty Days of Easter\, but don’t really spend much time with. As St. Luke’s “second chapter” after his gospel account of Jesus’ life\, the story of the Acts of the Apostles is the natural study to follow our study of the Gospel according to Luke that we did last fall. Bishop Loya has invited all of us in the Episcopal Church in Minnesota to study Acts during this Eastertide.\n\nWe will begin on Monday\, April 15\, and meet together\, all on Zoom\, every Monday through May 20 from 6:30pm to 7:45-ish.  Two resources are recommended: Acts (Interpretation Bible Studies)\, by Charles C. Williamson and Acts from Scratch\, by Donald L. Griggs and Paul W. Waleskey. We will also use our Bibles!\n\nIf you are interested in this study\, please email Rev. DESCRIPTION:Mondays from September 18 to November 21\, online at 7:00 pm \nAll are invited to a study of the Gospel according to Luke that will be led by a group of Calvary laypeople and clergy. We will be joining in with many others in the Episcopal Diocese of Minnesota in this study\, invited by Bishop Loya\, who sees great value in such a communal experiment and experience. The entire series will be on Zoom so that everyone who is interested can take part. Facilitators will be using the “Interpretation Bible Studies” on Luke by Thomas W. Walker. SUMMARY:Role of The Episcopal Church in the Minnesota Dakota and Ojibwe Removal
DESCRIPTION:From the Sisters of St. Francis website: \nThis is the story of Bishop Henry B. Whipple’s ministry at the time of the genocide of the Dakota and Ojibwe during his episcopacy. Bishop Whipple gained a reputation as a humanitarian and advocate of the Native Americans. He championed their cause because of what he saw as abusive and corrupt policy against the Native Americans. He was referred to as “straight tongue” by the Dakota due to his honesty in dealing with them. Bishop Whipple is best known for his clemency pleas in favor of the Dakota Sioux who fought against the U.S. Government in the U.S./Dakota War of 1862. \n$10 prepaid/preregistered. Preregistration is required. Register here by February 3 (A Zoom link will be emailed on February 5.) \nFather Ben Scott is an Episcopal priest whose family homesteaded land near Rock Dell\, with land patents issued in 1861 under Abraham Lincoln. Immediately\, the Dakota were removed from their tribal lands. He\, his wife\, and their family live on that land now. He received Holy Orders in the Episcopal Church in 1960\, and served in rural and urban congregations in Minnesota and New York City. Before retiring in 2000\, he was the Bishop’s Archdeacon in Southern Minnesota.

DESCRIPTION:Calvary’s centering prayer group meets via Zoom at 7 p.m. on the second and fourth Thursday of the month. We are eager to welcome new members.\n\nCentering prayer is a contemplative practice that has particular resonance during this time of social distance and upheaval. In centering prayer\, we quiet our minds and\, through meditative silence\, empty our Selves so the Holy Spirit can enter in. The practice strengthens our connection to God\, building resilience and wholeness not only for ourselves but for the larger community. DESCRIPTION:A shared opportunity from St. Luke’s\, sponsored by the Calvary Anti-racism Team and the Filmosophers Group\n  \nAs part of our work to become anti-racist\, St. Luke’s Episcopal Church invites Calvary to join their community to watch the Netflix documentary 13th and join a discussion. \n  \n13th is a profound and educational film\, available on Netflix for those who have a subscription and for free on YouTube. Reviewer Jessica Tisdale describes the film: \n  \n13th is the powerful documentary by Ava DuVernay that explores the prison system and how it is used as a weapon against minorities. The 100-minute film provides viewers with a vital history lesson on racial injustices that have hurt black Americans throughout the formation of this nation. It’s not an easy documentary to watch because it points a mirror back at the United States\, and holds the entire nation accountable for the systems it instilled and created to oppress certain groups of people. 13th should be required viewing for all. Not everyone is going to like it or agree with the film’s stance\, but that’s what makes it fascinating viewing. It makes you reevaluate the prison system.\n  \nAt 7:00 p.m. on Monday\, December 7\, we’ll gather on Zoom for discussion. Please watch the film on your own before this discussion date. A worksheet will be sent to all who register\, which will be used in our discussion. The worksheet is meant to be filled out as you are watching the film. \n  \nRegistration: Please email Diane O’Mara at dianeomara@charter.net\, and in the subject line\, write\, “RSVP for 13th” by Friday\, December 5 to register and to get your copy of the worksheet.
