Tallis\, perhaps the most prolific composer of the English Renaissance\, served in the Chapel Royal of King Henry VIII\, King Edward VI\, Queen Mary\, and Queen Elizabeth. He died on November 23\, 1585. The Motet Choir will perform settings of the Magnificat and Nunc dimittis from Tallis’ “Dorian Service” and his anthem\, “All People that on Earth do Dwell.”

Legend has it that ownership of Calvary’s corner lot rested on a bet made by George Head\, Rochester’s first mayor\, and Benjamin Whipple\, Minnesota’s first Episcopal Bishop: whoever threw a massive stone farthest would become the owner. Every year\, we celebrate Bishop Whipple’s historic win with a recreation of the event. Come and see if you are the parishioner who will win the stone throw this year. Many thanks to the Mueller family for organizing the Stone Throw. \nAnd that’s not all! We are excited to announce that we will be serving homemade scones (just like the ones served to Mayor Head and Bishop Whipple) with coffee\, cider\, and hot chocolate. DESCRIPTION:This Sunday\, June 1\, is a parish meeting for all members age 16 and over at Calvary. Please join me in Crawford Hall at 9:15 am to hear about our newly established endowments\, vote on changes in our financial policy\, and vote on the new bylaws we have been working on since January. \nCalvary has been blessed over the past year with financial gifts that allow us to establish two endowment funds\, funds that will benefit Calvary for generations to come. Our finance team has been working very hard over the past couple of months to establish these funds and work on some changes to our financial policy. One fund will be called the Property Preservation Fund\, meant to benefit the integrity of our buildings and grounds. The second fund will be called the Bishop Whipple Calvary Mission Fund\, a general endowment for the mission of the parish. Both funds will be managed professionally and used when interest is generated. \nThe parish meeting will begin promptly at 9:15\, so grab some coffee and come upstairs for this important gathering. We are blessed at Calvary not only with these financial resources but also with the amazing people who are members – and the skills and talents of our finance team are beyond measure. DESCRIPTION:The Oasis Garden planting is a long-standing tradition at Calvary. DESCRIPTION:7:00 pm\nEaster Vigil and first Eucharist of Easter\n\n\n\n\nAdapted from An Episcopal Dictionary of the Church:\nThe liturgy intended as the first (and arguably\, the primary) celebration of Easter in the BCP (pp. 284-95). It is also known as the Great Vigil. The service begins in darkness\, sometime between sunset on Holy Saturday and sunrise on Easter\, and consists of four parts: The Service of Light (kindling of new fire\, lighting the Paschal candle\, the Exsultet); The Service of Lessons (readings from the Hebrew Scriptures interspersed with psalms\, canticles\, and prayers); Christian Initiation (Holy Baptism) or the Renewal of Baptismal Vows; and the Eucharist. Through this liturgy\, the BCP recovers an ancient practice of keeping the Easter feast. Believers would gather in the hours of darkness ending at dawn on Easter to hear scripture and offer prayer. This night-long service of prayerful watching anticipated the baptisms that would come at first light and the Easter Eucharist. Easter was the primary baptismal occasion for the early church to the practical exclusion of all others. This practice linked the meanings of Christ’s dying and rising to the understanding of baptism.

DESCRIPTION:7:00 pm\nHoly Eucharist and Stripping of the Altar\n\n\n\n\nAdapted from An Episcopal Dictionary of the Church:\nThe Thursday in Holy Week. It is part of the Triduum\, or three holy days before Easter. It comes from the Latin mandatum novum\, “new commandment\,” from Jn 13:34. The ceremony of washing feet was also referred to as “the Maundy.” Maundy Thursday celebrations also commemorate the institution of the eucharist by Jesus “on the night he was betrayed.” Egeria\, a fourth-century pilgrim to Jerusalem\, describes elaborate celebrations and observances in that city on Maundy Thursday. Special celebration of the institution of the eucharist on Maundy Thursday is attested by the Council of Hippo in 381. There is provision for the consecration of the bread and wine for administering Holy Communion from the reserved sacrament on Good Friday. Following this\, the altar is stripped and all decorative furnishings are removed from the church.

SUMMARY:Rooted: An Episcopal Discipleship Group with an Introduction to Eucharistic Visitor Training
DESCRIPTION:Please join us in the Larson Fireside Room each Sunday at 9:15 AM for this small group study. The dates will be Sunday\, March 9th through Sunday\, April 13th. (Except for Sunday\, March 16) \nRooted is a course designed on our diocese’s Faith+Lead platform to help Minnesota Episcopalians learn more about the Christian faith and participate more fully in God’s life by engaging in daily spiritual practices. Our hope is that by the end of this course you will not only know more about God and the shape of the Christian life\, but also have a relationship with God\, and with a small group where you will receive and give encouragement\, support\, and accountability. \nIn addition to the Rooted curriculum\, we will be introducing aspects of our Eucharistic Visitor ministry. In addition to learning pastoral care skills\, this will be a great opportunity to learn about an important sacramental ministry to members of our church and to Episcopal hospital patients who come here from all over the world. \nRegistration is not required for this small group. It is something that anyone can participate in. You can attend just one session or all the sessions. Visitors to the church are welcome to attend. DESCRIPTION:Please attend an adult forum on the Calvary bylaws – and our need to revise these Bylaws – at 9:15 on Sunday\, March 23\, in Crawford Hall. This is the second forum on this important topic. Resources will be available to show all attendees the various entities whose requirements need to be met in our bylaws.\n\nOur vestry will approve a new draft at their March 16 meeting. In the late spring/early summer\, a special parish meeting will be called to approve the new bylaws\, along with a few other issues that we will be talking about.

DESCRIPTION:On February 2\, from 9:15 am to 10:15 am\, the Calvary Kids will be participating in a service project making tie blankets for Ronald McDonald House – families and teens\, please mark this date in your calendars now if you haven’t already! \nIf you would like to support this project\, we are still accepting donations of $16/blanket (please mark all donations “Tie Blanket Service Project”) or there are still blankets that need to be cut. DESCRIPTION:The annual meeting of Calvary is on Sunday\, January 26\, beginning at 10:30 am in the church. The business portion of the meeting will be held within the context of the Eucharistic liturgy in the church. \n\nWe will not have the 8:30 service that day so the whole congregation can gather together at 10:30\, but coffee hour will be at the normal 9:15 time.
