DESCRIPTION:This Sunday\, June 1\, is a parish meeting for all members age 16 and over at Calvary. Please join me in Crawford Hall at 9:15 am to hear about our newly established endowments\, vote on changes in our financial policy\, and vote on the new bylaws we have been working on since January. \nCalvary has been blessed over the past year with financial gifts that allow us to establish two endowment funds\, funds that will benefit Calvary for generations to come. Our finance team has been working very hard over the past couple of months to establish these funds and work on some changes to our financial policy. One fund will be called the Property Preservation Fund\, meant to benefit the integrity of our buildings and grounds. The second fund will be called the Bishop Whipple Calvary Mission Fund\, a general endowment for the mission of the parish. Both funds will be managed professionally and used when interest is generated. \nThe parish meeting will begin promptly at 9:15\, so grab some coffee and come upstairs for this important gathering. We are blessed at Calvary not only with these financial resources but also with the amazing people who are members – and the skills and talents of our finance team are beyond measure. DESCRIPTION:The Oasis Garden planting is a long-standing tradition at Calvary. Each spring\, parishioners of all ages gather to plant and mulch the hundreds of flowers that help make our churchyard a welcoming oasis for our congregation\, for Mayo patients and staff\, and for all in the community. Just come on Friday\, May 2 between 4:30 and 6:30. You can practice your Spanish and drink margaritas with your fellow parishioners. (Actually\, you can speak any language you want and drink whatever you want!) \nWe will meet at Beetle’s Bar and Grill\, located two blocks west of Saint Marys Hospital on 2nd Street SW. This will be very informal. Popcorn and water are free. You can purchase other food and drink. The first person to arrive and tell us what EIWACEC stands for gets a free drink!

Easter Day is the annual feast of the resurrection\, the pascha or Christian Passover\, and the eighth day of cosmic creation. Faith in Jesus’ resurrection on the Sunday or third day following his crucifixion is at the heart of Christian belief. Easter sets the experience of springtime next to the ancient stories of deliverance and the proclamation of the risen Christ. In the west\, Easter occurs on the first Sunday after the full moon on or after the vernal equinox. Easter always falls between Mar. 22 and Apr. 25 inclusive. Following Jewish custom\, the feast begins at sunset on Easter Eve with the Great Vigil of Easter.

SUMMARY:The Great Vigil of Easter
DESCRIPTION:7:00 pm\nEaster Vigil and first Eucharist of Easter\n\n\n\n\nAdapted from An Episcopal Dictionary of the Church:\nThe liturgy intended as the first (and arguably\, the primary) celebration of Easter in the BCP (pp. 284-95). It is also known as the Great Vigil. The service begins in darkness\, sometime between sunset on Holy Saturday and sunrise on Easter\, and consists of four parts: The Service of Light (kindling of new fire\, lighting the Paschal candle\, the Exsultet); The Service of Lessons (readings from the Hebrew Scriptures interspersed with psalms\, canticles\, and prayers); Christian Initiation (Holy Baptism) or the Renewal of Baptismal Vows; and the Eucharist. Through this liturgy\, the BCP recovers an ancient practice of keeping the Easter feast. Believers would gather in the hours of darkness ending at dawn on Easter to hear scripture and offer prayer. This night-long service of prayerful watching anticipated the baptisms that would come at first light and the Easter Eucharist. Easter was the primary baptismal occasion for the early church to the practical exclusion of all others. This practice linked the meanings of Christ’s dying and rising to the understanding of baptism.

DESCRIPTION:12:00 pm\nGood Friday liturgy \n7:00 pm\nGood Friday liturgy \n\nAdapted from An Episcopal Dictionary of the Church:\nThe Friday before Easter Day\, on which the church commemorates the crucifixion of Jesus. It is a day of fasting and special acts of discipline and self-denial. In the early church\, candidates for baptism\, joined by others\, fasted for a day or two before the Paschal feast. In the west the first of those days eventually acquired the character of historical reenactment of the passion and death of Christ. The liturgy of the day includes John’s account of the Passion gospel\, a solemn form of intercession known as the solemn collects (dating from ancient Rome)\, and optional devotions before the cross (commonly known as the veneration of the cross). The eucharist is not celebrated in the Episcopal Church on Good Friday\, but Holy Communion may be administered from the reserved sacrament at the Good Friday service.

DESCRIPTION:7:00 pm\nHoly Eucharist and Stripping of the Altar\n\n\n\n\nAdapted from An Episcopal Dictionary of the Church:\nThe Thursday in Holy Week. It is part of the Triduum\, or three holy days before Easter. It comes from the Latin mandatum novum\, “new commandment\,” from Jn 13:34. The ceremony of washing feet was also referred to as “the Maundy.” Maundy Thursday celebrations also commemorate the institution of the eucharist by Jesus “on the night he was betrayed.” Egeria\, a fourth-century pilgrim to Jerusalem\, describes elaborate celebrations and observances in that city on Maundy Thursday. Special celebration of the institution of the eucharist on Maundy Thursday is attested by the Council of Hippo in 381. DESCRIPTION:Please join us in the Larson Fireside Room each Sunday at 9:15 AM for this small group study. The dates will be Sunday\, March 9th through Sunday\, April 13th. (Except for Sunday\, March 16) \nRooted is a course designed on our diocese’s Faith+Lead platform to help Minnesota Episcopalians learn more about the Christian faith and participate more fully in God’s life by engaging in daily spiritual practices. Our hope is that by the end of this course you will not only know more about God and the shape of the Christian life\, but also have a relationship with God\, and with a small group where you will receive and give encouragement\, support\, and accountability. \nIn addition to the Rooted curriculum\, we will be introducing aspects of our Eucharistic Visitor ministry. In addition to learning pastoral care skills\, this will be a great opportunity to learn about an important sacramental ministry to members of our church and to Episcopal hospital patients who come here from all over the world. \nRegistration is not required for this small group. It is something that anyone can participate in. You can attend just one session or all the sessions. Visitors to the church are welcome to attend. DESCRIPTION:We will host a forum on January 19 after the 8:30 service in Crawford Hall to review proposed updates to Calvary’s bylaws. Our bylaws were last updated in 1991 and they are not aligned with the language and requirements in the current canons of the Episcopal Church in Minnesota. Further\, the ECMN implemented a requirement in 2001 that parishes in the dioceses review and make any needed changes to their bylaws at least every ten years. Calvary is not in compliance with this requirement.\n\nAt the forum\, we will present a summary of the process to update Calvary’s bylaws (which began in 2021) and review the draft of the proposed bylaws that was approved by the vestry at their December meeting.\n\nFind links to Calvary’s current bylaws and the proposed new bylaws in The Visitor.

SUMMARY:Lessons and Carols
DESCRIPTION:Our Calvary Motet Choir is joining with the Chancel Choir of First Presbyterian Church of Rochester to present Lessons and Carols on Sunday\, December 15. The first presentation will be at 10:15 am at First Presbyterian Church. The second presentation of the Lessons and Carols will be at Calvary at 4:00 pm. \nInterim Music Director Jeff Daehn and Presbyterian Director John Stender have been working closely to put together a meaningful variety of choral and instrumental music. Joining the choirs will be a string quintet that will have both solo and accompaniment duties. \nThese special worship services are free and open to the public.  We hope many of you will make our Lessons and Carols part of your Advent and Christmas celebrations.
