DESCRIPTION:As part of the process for hiring our next director of music\, we will host a parish listening session at 9:15 am on October 6th in Crawford Hall. We are seeking input from the congregation to inform the drafting of an updated job description for the role. Questions we are seeking input on include: \n\nWhat should the scope of the role be beyond the requirements of planning liturgical music\, directing the choir\, and serving as organist?\nWhat role should the position play in outreach\, fellowship\, and other pillars of parish life?\nWhat could this position do that we are not currently doing and how will that enrich our faith community?\n\nThe listening session will be hosted by vestry member Michelle Ackerman and co-treasurer Darren Cooper\, who\, along with vestry member Anne High and Reverend Beth\, are leading a workgroup to discern the future of the director of music role at Calvary. Please come with your ideas and aspirations for the director of music role. Your input is crucial and we look forward to hearing from you.

All homemade pies baked by Calvary parishioners are welcome. The Greatest 2024 Pie Baker at Calvary will be crowned in the courtyard following the picnic! Then\, we will all be able to sample the delicious fruits of our pie bakers’ labors.  To enter\, just have your pie at Calvary by 10 am the day of the picnic with your name on the bottom of your pie plate. We are going to judge the pies starting at 10 am to give our panel of celebrity judges time to finish before the 10:30 service\, so please don’t be late. The rules are simple. DESCRIPTION:School is starting in late August and Calvary will be entering a new and exciting program year.  At both the 8:30 am and 10:30 am services on Sunday\, August 25\, we will be blessing our children as they head back to school\, and blessing their backpacks as symbols of their work.  We will also be blessing the briefcases and all other symbols of the work of adults – cell phones\, iPads\, knitting needles\, gardening\, carpentry\, and cooking tools – please bring any symbols of your work\, and your children and their backpacks\, to church on August 25 so that we can send one another out into the world to do the work God has given us to do with the blessing of this beloved community\, and the assurance of God’s presence\, for the months ahead.

DESCRIPTION:7:00 pm\nEaster Vigil and first Eucharist of Easter\n\nJoin us for the Agape potluck meal following the service.\n\n\n\n\nAdapted from An Episcopal Dictionary of the Church:\nThe liturgy intended as the first (and arguably\, the primary) celebration of Easter in the BCP (pp. 284-95). It is also known as the Great Vigil. The service begins in darkness\, sometime between sunset on Holy Saturday and sunrise on Easter\, and consists of four parts: The Service of Light (kindling of new fire\, lighting the Paschal candle\, the Exsultet); The Service of Lessons (readings from the Hebrew Scriptures interspersed with psalms\, canticles\, and prayers); Christian Initiation (Holy Baptism) or the Renewal of Baptismal Vows; and the Eucharist. Through this liturgy\, the BCP recovers an ancient practice of keeping the Easter feast. Believers would gather in the hours of darkness ending at dawn on Easter to hear scripture and offer prayer. This night-long service of prayerful watching anticipated the baptisms that would come at first light and the Easter Eucharist. Easter was the primary baptismal occasion for the early church to the practical exclusion of all others. This practice linked the meanings of Christ’s dying and rising to the understanding of baptism.

It is part of the Triduum\, or three holy days before Easter. It comes from the Latin mandatum novum\, “new commandment\,” from Jn 13:34. The ceremony of washing feet was also referred to as “the Maundy.” Maundy Thursday celebrations also commemorate the institution of the eucharist by Jesus “on the night he was betrayed.” Egeria\, a fourth-century pilgrim to Jerusalem\, describes elaborate celebrations and observances in that city on Maundy Thursday. Special celebration of the institution of the eucharist on Maundy Thursday is attested by the Council of Hippo in 381. There is provision for the consecration of the bread and wine for administering Holy Communion from the reserved sacrament on Good Friday. SUMMARY:Palm Sunday Worship
DESCRIPTION:Passion Sunday Services\nWe will have two worship services on Passion Sunday: \n\nAt 8:30\, we will celebrate the Holy Eucharist with the Rite I liturgy and a reading of the Passion Gospel by the rector.\nAt 10:30am\, the Passion according to Mark will weave throughout the whole service\, inviting us to think differently about a story we know well\, and shaking up the liturgy a bit. We will be led through the Passion by two readers: Barbara Toman and Ian Jarman\, by the Motet Choir\, and by you\, the congregation\, as we sing familiar and moving hymns.\n\nLet us move into Holy Week by joining together in these beautiful liturgies.
